What CSL does
Headquartered in the UK, CSL is the leading provider of critical connectivity services for business customers.
It is best known for alarm signalling and has expanded into other Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity uses such as telecare and wider critical infrastructure applications. The business operates mainly in the UK (approximately 78% of revenue), with the remainder across parts of Europe. CSL manages over three million active connections for more than 5,000 customers, with a highly recurring revenue model, strong customer retention and high net revenue retention, underpinned by the critical nature of its services.
Why we invested
- Resilient, recurring business: CSL has a long track record of steady growth and has continued to perform through successive macroeconomic shocks, supported by highly recurring revenues and low customer churn.
- High customer stickiness: Its services are embedded in customers’ day-to-day operations and rely on long-lived installed devices, which drives repeatable, predictable demand.
- Structural growth in IoT and critical connectivity: IoT refers to connected devices – such as alarms, sensors, routers, meters and medical monitors – that send and receive data remotely. Demand is supported by rising device connectivity, regulation and ongoing network upgrades.
- Differentiated positioning: CSL focuses on mission-critical applications and pairs connectivity with managed services – platform, monitoring and support – which deepens customer relationships and raises barriers to entry.
- Clear growth plan: The strategy is to scale proven growth initiatives, with further upside from new verticals and geographies, partner-led growth and selective M&A.
Key drivers:
- Scaling the core: Strengthening CSL’s leadership in alarm signalling while growing adjacent IoT verticals such as telecare, transport and logistics, infrastructure and utilities.
- International expansion: Entering newer European geographies and drawing on major-project credentials to win further critical-infrastructure work.
- rSIM adoption: Broader uptake of rSIM – a resilient SIM that keeps devices connected by holding multiple network profiles and switching automatically if coverage weakens – represents upside beyond the core plan.
- Selective M&A: Deploying additional capital on acquisitions that add capability, open new verticals and broaden geographic reach.
